The core vaccine set for Australian cats: what's covered, when boosters are due, what F3 vs F5 actually means, and whether indoor-only cats still need them.

Cat vaccinations in Australia are categorised by the number of diseases covered in the combined shot. The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) and World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) update their recommendations every 2โ€“3 years. Here's what's current.

What F3, F4, F5 cover

F3 (core vaccine โ€” recommended for all cats) - Feline panleukopenia (feline parvovirus) - Feline calicivirus - Feline herpesvirus (rhinotracheitis)

F4 = F3 + chlamydia โ€” increasingly uncommon; most clinics now skip straight to F5 if extra cover is warranted.

F5 = F3 + chlamydia + feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) โ€” recommended for cats with any outdoor access or cats in multi-cat households.

Kitten schedule

The three-kitten-shot series matters because maternal antibodies can interfere with the immune response. Two-shot schedules (still common at some clinics) leave 10โ€“20% of kittens with suboptimal immunity.

Adult cats

After the 12-month booster, most vets now recommend F3 every three years (WSAVA guideline) and FeLV annually for outdoor-access cats. Some clinics still push annual F3 โ€” it's not harmful, but evidence supports triennial.

Indoor-only cats โ€” do they still need vaccinations?

Yes. Panleukopenia in particular is shed in faeces and can be tracked indoors on shoes. A 2023 Sydney outbreak infected multiple indoor-only cats this way. The baseline F3 every three years is cheap insurance.

Titre testing (an alternative)

Titre tests measure actual antibody levels in the blood and can confirm your cat is still protected without needing a booster. Most AU labs (Gribbles, IDEXX) offer feline titre testing for $120โ€“180. Not all vets promote it, but it's a legitimate option if you prefer to vaccinate only when immunity has actually waned.

Cost (AU, 2026)

Most pet insurance routine care add-ons cover vaccinations.
