What drives the cost difference
Value kibbles rely heavily on grains and plant protein — they meet minimum standards but the amino acid profile (especially taurine) comes mostly from supplements rather than meat. Mid-range Aussie-made kibbles (Black Hawk, Advance) are the sweet spot for most Australian cats — higher meat content, still under $1.50/day for a medium cat.
Wet food costs more per kilo but most of the weight is water. In kilocalories delivered, a 50/50 mix is often cheaper than premium dry alone, and much better for urinary and kidney health. The mixed option above reflects this.
Real-world AU cat food budget benchmarks
- Small cat (3.5 kg): $40–65/month on mid-range kibble + wet.
- Medium cat (4.5 kg): $55–85/month.
- Large cat (6 kg domestic): $70–110/month.
- Maine Coon / very large breed (8+ kg): $90–140/month.
