Half domestic cat, half Asian Leopard Cat (originally). Modern Bengals (F5 and later) are fully domestic but retain the wild coat and a lot of the drive. Stunning cats; demanding owners required.

Bengal temperament

Intelligent, vocal, physical. Opens cupboards, plays with running water, climbs curtains. Loyal to their person. Not a starter cat.

History in Australia

Developed in 1960s–80s California by Jean Mill, crossing Asian Leopard Cats with domestics. Import to Australia requires F5+ generation and compliance with state wildlife laws — ACT and WA require permits for earlier generations.

Insurance note: Premiums are mid-to-high. HCM, pyruvate kinase deficiency (PK-Def, DNA test), and bladder issues are the top claims. Insurance before age 2.

Frequently asked questions

Are Bengals legal in Australia?

Yes — but only from the F5 generation onwards (five generations removed from the Asian Leopard Cat). ACT and WA require permits for F1–F4. Check local regulations before importing or buying from interstate.

Can Bengals be indoor-only?

Yes but only with serious enrichment — cat trees, puzzle feeders, daily interactive play, and ideally a catio. An under-stimulated Bengal will rip your house apart.
